Walk Bridge Design
Constructing a replacement bridge over an active waterway in a densely developed urban area, while continuing to maintain train service on the Northeast corridor, will result in temporary impacts during construction. The nature and extent of these temporary impacts are similar for any alternative involving replacement or rehabilitation of the existing bridge. Of the alternatives analyzed, the 240' Vertical Lift Bridge offers less disruption to the local community, rail service (two-track outage) and waterway users (channel restrictions) during construction. The Department has selected a replacement bridge option that has the shortest construction duration, therefore minimizing impacts to rail users and all modes of maritime traffic (commercial, recreational and the rowing community). The 240' Vertical Lift Bridge doesn't limit the future use and development of the properties upstream of the bridge, and maintains the current uses of the river.
